Garden Club 2011
Theresa meets with the kids in the Residential Treatment Program every Friday to teach them how to plant a garden, how to tend for the garden, and what to do with the fruits of labor.
“It has been a rewarding experience helping the Residential youth with their garden project. We started off with just 6 lessons on the basics of gardening, so the children could grow their own vegetable garden. We all enjoyed it so much that we have started a garden club and we meet every week. It’s great to teach them new things in fun and interesting ways, and we all enjoy the Garden Club - the kids do and I do. I’m glad to help the United Methodist Children’s Home make a difference!”
They started this year by planting 80 strawberry plants in this pyramid.
One week, Theresa gave the youth caterpillars in jars that will cocoon. The kids keep the jars in the homes and will release the butterflies when they emerge.
Besides strawberries, the kids chose to plant lettuce, cabbage, beans, peppers, potatoes, radishes, and carrots in the raised-bed garden.
