UMCH Training Seminar: Child Sex Offenders:
What we know, what we don't know,
and what we thought we knew but were wrong about.
Public outrage has produced sex offender registration laws, Amber Alerts, tougher sentencing, etc. However, some of these measures are actually increasing risk and reducing safety in our society. Much of what is believed about these individuals is based upon emotional reaction to this deplorable behavior and is not grounded in research and fact. Because of this, some of the efforts being made to insure our children’s safety are not effective and some may actually create more victims.
This training will examine why individuals sexually offend and what research shows really works to increase the safety of our children. Video-taped segments will be viewed in which pedophiles and sexual predators reveal their thinking and behaviors. Participants will be introduced to how evaluators predict recidivism and assign risk, as well as what components are necessary for effective treatment of adults (male & female), youth, and children. The difference between traditional counseling (which is often all but useless) and effective sex offender-specific treatment will be examined.
This is a repeat of a training that was previously presented to a sold out audience at Southeastern Illinois College on January 30, 2008.
Targeted Audience:
This seminar is designed for all professionals who deal with child sex offenders and their victims: counselors, judges, attorneys, law enforcement, child advocates, teachers, and others. The general public is also invited.
