U.S House of Representative John Shimkus’ office contacted United Methodist Children’s Home with great news regarding the application to renew the YouthBuild grant through the U.S. Department of Labor.

UMCH has been awarded $1,099,663 for their YouthBuild program. This grant will fund another two full years of programming to young adults working to earn their GED that live in Jefferson and Marion counties.  The Exeter Group partnered with UMCH in writing and obtaining this grant.

Congressman Shimkus stated, “I want to congratulate UMCH on their success in obtaining over one million dollars in grant funding for YouthBuild.  I have visited both sites and understand the value this program brings to the community.  I am especially proud of the young men and women participating in this program.”

Congressman John Shimkus has visited and addressed YouthBuild participants on various occasions.

In an email, Gary Lemmon, President / CEO of UMCH, explained, “This was a competitive grant with funding cut back significantly nation-wide.  Having this great program refunded is a testimony to the outstanding work of Program Manager Rick Marlow, his wonderful staff, and all of the hard-working youth who took advantage of this opportunity to better their lives."

Rick Marlow is focusing on the next step for YouthBuild participants: “The next step is internships, job shadowing, and job placements.  We would like to connect with more local businesses.”

Recruiting YouthBuild participants is an ongoing process, and they are taking applications now for the next cycle.  Please contact Rick Marlow, YouthBuild Program Manager, at 242-6723 for more information.
